AT 2026 – The When is Now
April 4, 2026 § Leave a comment
Finally I got my 2025 taxes filed, and most of my other items on the back burner taken care of. My ticket to Atlanta has been purchased; My gear determinations have been finalised; I have even cleaned up my townhouse quite a bit; I have emptied my refrigerator of most of the perishables; My clothing selections are made. I am leaving on Monday and after a probably not so restful journey on an Amtrak train, I will be dropped off at the Amicola Visitor Center by Noon on Tuesday and my journey will begin.
You can check out my gear list at https://lighterpack.com/r/di270n.
I will try for nightly updates to my Instagram account if I have service. Otherwise those will be sporadic, but I will catch you up there. If I am motivated enough to type here, then I will type here as well, but I will not be hauling my external keyboard around like I did on the bike last summer.
The AT is mostly a woodsy corridor with some occasional mountain vistas, so yes, I will be taking the time to gather the composite pieces to my panoramic pies, but I think also on this journey I will attempt as much as I am allowed, to take as many portraits on the trail as I can. We will do a “Faces of the AT” as long as I can get comfortable asking people to let me photograph them in that way. I really like the Portrait, so let’s see what can be done.
Cheers
AT 2026 – When Will I Get Started?
March 25, 2026 § Leave a comment
It’s March the 25th and my original start date was March 8th. What am I talking about? Last year I did a big Bike About (Actually I did two bike abouts, one was just a week) across most of the country. I called it “Bike About 2025“. This year my plan was a big Walk About starting at the Southern end of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia and lasting as long as I want to keep hiking. Yes, I am guilty of procrastination, and yes, it was a pretty nice Winter for snowshoeing and so there were plenty of distractions. Also I have some personal things going on which require attention and I have been slow in dealing with all of them and that is the main reason for my delay. As I was getting a grip on those things a “Help Please!” plea came from daughter #2 in Bend Oregon. Apparently when Day Care mentioned that they observed the standard Spring Break, my daughter and son-in-law weren’t listening and they needed help looking after Roman during that week, which when the message came to me (Thursday) was the following week. So I delay further and write this now from Bend Oregon where I will be until this Sunday. I still have to pay my taxes, though the paperwork is mostly complete.
